Where do you draw the line between disaster media and the dystopian/post-apocalyptic? In so many movies and books today the apocalypse is narrowly diverted, or is so innocuous that by the end of the movie or book the world miraculously returns to normal. Lucifer’s Hammer is not one of these simple stories!
Written by Larry Niven and Jerry Pournelle, Lucifer’s Hammer treats the apocalypse as something from which there is no easy return. No easy fix from the government, no miracle drug, no sudden nuclear blast. Lucifer’s Hammer is the story of a comet that is at first studied as a near earth asteroid, right up till the end when it hits the Earth. The first part of the book is the setup, what the world is currently about. The second half is about what the world becomes.
After the hammer hits the world devolves into different factions. Some people manage to find safe haven in groups where they try to survive as a part of a collective. Others join with a cannibalistic ex-military group lead by a crazed sergeant and delusional TV preacher. These different groups find themselves at odds as they fight to survive in this new world.
This was a great book, but not one that you should consider for a quick afternoon read. Lucifer’s Hammer explores the darker sides of humanity in a world that is forever changed. It is a bit slow to start as the first part of the book is a lot of setup for the latter half. I do however highly recommend it. Some may consider it more of a disaster story, but it shows the human condition in dire times like few stories are able to. Be warned though, the many varied characters in the story will leave you wandering where you would fall.
